Christian's Birthday...Seven Years old!!

Christian's birthday was big and crazy and fun as usual, even though Christian was really not feeling well.  But he still made the best of the massive amount of presents and his basketball birthday cake.  (Credit goes to Jake on the cake this year.)

Here are seven things about Christian at seven years old:

1. He has lost two teeth, the bottom two.
2. He is so smart, and the top of his class in both reading and math. And he is a good student, who always does what the teacher asks, and never wants to be doing the wrong thing at the wrong time.
3. He can be the best big brother helper when he chooses to be.  His little brothers sure look up to him and follow anything he says! And he loves little Lincoln.
4. He is creative. He can build some pretty amazing creations out of Lego, which he has had a lot of fun building with this past year.
5. He still loves sports and had a lot of fun playing on his first Junior Jazz basketball team this winter, and will play on a baseball team this spring, coached by Jake.
6. He loves yellow and orange.
7. He loves chocolate, chinese food, all breakfast foods, and homemade Rice-a-roni.

Christmas Day

Christmas Day was wonderful.
Busy all day long, but wonderful.
We did the usual Christmas in the morning, birthday in the afternoon.
Grandma and Grandpa and Melissa came for Russian borscht for lunch, then the birthday party to follow.
Christian was pretty sick, but managed to have a little fun.
It was a LOUD Christmas.
We needed way too many batteries this year!
We stayed in our pajamas all day long.
Christian was the only one who opted to get dressed in his new sweats.

There was so much excitement in the air when everyone first woke up, even Lincoln could feel it!  He was so happy and excited!

Love these early morning faces....

Mike Wazowski was definitely a favorite of Owen's

ROAR!...

Minions for our minions!  (from Grammy)

The LOOT:
Santa brought a Dream Lite for Christian, a camera for Ethan, Zoo Legos for Owen, and slipper socks for Lincoln, as well as a Rescue Bot for each of them.  Those may have been the biggest hit of the whole day, especially for Ethan. Grammy gave each of the boys a sleeping bag and a cute monster pillow.

And one of my favorite pictures of the day....
Lincoln and Grandma!

Handsome Christmas Boys

Between sickness and surgery our entire family only made it to church ONE time in December, the Sunday before Christmas, which was too bad because I had these darling Christmas sweaters from Grammy for the boys!  They looked very handsome the day they wore them. :)

Christmas Magic

I love playing Santa. :)

December Festivities

This year was much more low key than last, and I have few pictures to prove it. :)  We had lots of sickness at the beginning of December, then Ethan's eye surgery mid-December, and then more sickness at the end of the month, so we really just laid low most of the month.  Plus I have a baby this year, so that added to the slower pace.  We made it to a few parties, and did a couple of Christmas activities at home, but compared to last year, it was quite low key!

Making our traditional Christmas treats with the boys (and the only ones I managed to do this year! We didn't even make any sugar cookies!  Poor Santa got store bought grasshoppers that we luckily had in the freezer!)

Merkley Family Christmas Party
JJ and me...twinners!

Christmas Eve Breakfast at Grandma and Grandpa's...this was a little program the kids put on.  So cute!

....having four children has definitely reduced the amount of pictures I take!

Mommy and Owen

Ethan loves the camera and loves to take pictures.  He even got his very own camera from Santa.  But because of that, sometimes I get some gems like this one.  :) And while I'm at it, here's a little about Owen, because I don't want to forget.

Owen. Owen.  We adore Owen so very much.  He is so fun, so funny, so helpful, so sweet. He makes me laugh out loud all the time.  He says the funniest things and has the funniest expressions.  He is so good at entertaining himself.  He loves legos (Duplo size) and will build and play for hours with them.  He is particular about his clothes more than my other boys have been.  Notice he is wearing a pumpkin shirt in front of the Christmas tree?  It is one of his favorites.  He is pretty insistent about picking out his own shirts.  He is the king of treasures and always has some kind of container full of an assortment of toys he has gathered.  He uses old wipes containers, show boxes, a Christmas box, and his shopping cart is his ultimate treasure carrier.   He takes occasional naps, but when he doesn't nap, it's because he plays in his room for two hours instead.  He will literally stay in there and not come out for at least an hour and a half.  Sometimes I just stand and peek through his crack in the door and watch him play.  It entrances me.  When he does take a nap or goes to bed, I always sing him a song, and the latest is one he calls "stegosaurus," which I made up and he has now learned nearly all the words. He cracks me up.  He loves his "guys", which include Mike Wazowski, "Kebin" his one-eyed minion, smurfs, and other figures that rotate through his treasures. He calls Monsters University "Monsters Inc-versity" no matter how many times I correct him.  He also asks me to "konk" his nerf gun, no matter how many times I repeat "cock." He loves to sing and go to nursery, and is the best singer in there!  He loves puzzles and is extremely good at them.  He also loves to do them with Grandpa. He loves to go places, and is really fun company.  Jake LOVES taking Owen on errands!  He loves his brothers, but also loves the occasional mornings when he has the house to himself and can play without anyone bugging him.

He is my easiest child and my hardest child all at the same time.

He requires all the patience I can muster when he insists on doing things by himself, and his way.  On Sunday I was trying to hurry him to get dressed and when we were halfway done, I helped him get his arm in his shirt and he insisted on starting ALL over!  Ugh! That's Owen.  I have learned just to let him do it his way the first time, it will be much faster in the end.  He is so loud.  So extremely loud.  He has been this way ever since he could make a sound.  And he truly only has one volume: LOUD.  He has meltdowns that are out of this world, way worse that my others ever had.  And if he wakes up before his is ready, watch out.  He will scream at me for half an hour or more. He screams if I come in his room, he screams if I leave. He screams if I sit in his chair, or if I lay on the floor.  He won't let me touch him or hold him, and he will even start kicking or hitting me.  I never know what he wants and can never understand him.  I usually just leave him in his room to scream, but sometimes he will follow me around the house screaming. He will just scream and scream until finally he's either had enough screaming or I said something that triggered his interested and distracted him from his melt down. Like flipping a switch.  I haven't figured out any one thing that works yet.  But when he finally calms down, he's back to his cute, sweet Owen, and it's impossible not to instantly love him and forget about the melt down.

My dear Owen,

Don't ever lose your excitement and enthusiasm for life.  You are so much fun to be with.  I wouldn't trade you for the world!  How lucky I am to be your Mommy!

Love, Mommy

And while I'm talking about Owen, here are two pictures he colored.  I love how he colors at this age!  One color, every inch of the picture must be covered.

Little Moments

One day in December I came down the hall and stumbled upon this scene.

Need I say more?  A picture is worth a thousand words.

But to add a detail...Owen instigated this completely on his own. I had left the room with Lincoln in the bouncer, but Owen had retrieved the Bumbo and some books all on his own to read to Lincoln.
He melts my heart.
