It was a great effort to make it to Grandpa's funeral, but we are so glad we did. It was such a blessing to be there with family, and feel the spirit of eternal families. And really, it was quite a fun adventure!
My sister Sally and her cute kids, Caleb and Ella drove down with us, so we had a full van--three adults, and five kids. I was so impressed at how well they all did! We had a 5 year old, two 3 year olds and two one year olds, and we only had to stop once! The funeral was in Parowan, and it took us just under four hours to get there. Not bad with five kids. And no one even napped in the car.
We woke the kids up at 6:15, buckled them in the van and headed on our way. We made one potty stop and ate muffins for breakfast, and made it to Parowan by 10:15, where we changed into our church clothes in the parking lot, and discovered I'd left my black cardigan at home. Oh well. And we then headed into the family viewing before the funeral began.
It was so nice to be there. The funeral was nice and the kids all did amazingly well, considering the circumstances. I was trying my best to keep my children as quiet as possible, since we weren't just sitting in church, but in a funeral, and on the third row, no less, but we certainly weren't silent. And Ethan definitely had to go potty at least twice, and get a drink, with Christian in tow. :) But when the funeral was over, Uncle Tom leaned over the bench and said how glad he was to have the noise of the little ones there. And how appropriate it was. I thought that was sweet.
After the funeral we went to the cemetery for the dedication of the grave. The casket looked beautiful, and we all got to put a red rose on top. I loved to see the American flag on top and hear the gun salute and the taps played. It was a great honor to my grandpa, and grandma too. Although Christian and Ethan didn't appreciate the gun salute as much. It happened so fast I didn't have a chance to warn them, and Ethan ended up in tears! Fortunately Owen was sleeping in the car, for a much needed nap, and slept through it all. I also loved seeing Peter help carry the casket as a pall bearer. One thing I discovered at the funeral is that Peter looks just like Grandpa when he was a young man! Especially the picture of him in his uniform. It was neat to see that resemblance. I am so glad all my siblings were able to make it to the funeral! It was so nice to be together, even if for a short time. Lindsay and Joe, we missed you!
It was such a beautiful day to remember my Grandpa, and what a wonderful life he lived. His funeral program said, "An Honorable Man." He truly was.

These are my great-grandparents, and they had thirteen children.
Grandpa Gurr was the youngest of thirteen. |

We made an attempt to get a picture of all of us at the cemetary.
Owen was missing because he was asleep in the van. |

After the funeral we let the kids all play at the park for about an hour, and then headed on the road. We stopped at Larry's Drive-in for dinner in Fillmore, and then got everyone in jammies and made it all the way home. Oh, except for that emergency potty stop in Orem when Ethan was having a melt down. Other than that, it was smooth sailing! It was a long day, but well worth it. I am so glad we went!
